Rutherford County Volunteer Fire Dept. Receives Federal Grant

Congressman Bart Gordon announced the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program will be awarding $78,000 to the Rutherford County Volunteer Fire Department for new breathing apparatus and essential safety equipment.

“Every day, countless lives are saved by the courageous efforts of Tennessee’s firefighters,” Gordon said. “Programs like the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program ensure our first responders have the equipment they need to work as quickly and safely as possible.”

The Rutherford County Volunteer Fire Department will put the funds toward the purchase of 11 new Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses, or SCBAs, which provide firefighters with breathable air during fire calls. The new SCBAs have a number of potentially life-saving safety features, including couplings that allow for easy resupply of clean air in the event that a firefighter becomes trapped and requires rescue. The funds will also provide for the air compressor required to refill the devices, according to Chief Matthew Young.

“I can’t tell you how much this grant is going to help our department and our ability to respond,” Young said. “The SCBAs we’ve been using are from 1991, and they’re serviceable but don’t meet new federal standards. The new equipment is much safer and more firefighter-friendly.”

Gordon has been a strong supporter of the AFG program, which has awarded more than 1,300 grants to Tennessee first responders since 2000, totaling more than $108 million. As chairman of the House Science and Technology Committee, Gordon helped to pass the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act in November, strengthening the AFG program and making it more accessible to stations and departments suffering economic hardship.

New Fire Station Planned

(Reprint from Murfreesboro Daily News Journal - byline: Scott Broden)

Rutherford Volunteer Fire Department hopes to open a new station within a year north of Stones River National Battlefield off Old Nashville Highway.

"This will be our Station 2," Lt. Tim Alexander said. "It should bring homeowners' insurance down drastically."

Alexander will present site plans to the Rutherford County Regional Planning Commission at 1 p.m. Monday June 22nd. The department seeks to build a 1,200-square-foot station on an acre at the end of Thurston Drive about a half mile south of state Route 840. The plan calls for a two-story building with a restroom and two garage doors.

The volunteer department recently obtained a conditional use permit for the station from the county's Board of Zoning Appeals. "Everyone was for it," BZA Chairman Zane Cantrell said. "The volunteer firefighters will be able to get to people in an emergency much quicker than they can now without the fire station."

The volunteer department's Station I is at 810 Old Salem Road near the county jail in Murfreesboro. Some 50 volunteers also protect the Barfield and Kimbro road area, and they want to build a station there within the next two years, as well.

"Our district goes all the way around the city," said Alexander, who serves as the chairman of the department's building committee. Alexander expects the future station off Old Nashville Highway to help his department go from having an Insurance Services Office rating of 9 in the northern area it serves to a 5. The lower the better when it comes to these insurance ratings. Murfreesboro's full-time department has a 2 rating, and no firefighting department is rated a 1 in Tennessee, according to the city.

The new station will cost $40,000 to build, Alexander said. "We've been saving money for about 10 years for it," he said.

The land came from a donation by neighboring property owners Don Gentry and Don Chambers, who runs the Lojac Enterprises, Inc., concrete producing business next door to the proposed station.
